A shooting pain lasting a few seconds is common in healthy young people and means nothing. A sensation of a “catch” at the end of a deep breath is also trivial and doesn’t need attention. Heart pain almost never occur in previously healthy men under 30 years of age or women under 40 and is uncommon for the following ten years in each sex.
If you press a finger on the chest at the spot of discomfort and reproduce or aggravate the pain, it’s a probably chest wall pain. Heart and chest wall pain are rarely present at the same time.
The hyperventilation syndrome is a frequent cause of chest pain, particularly in young people. If you’re dizzy or have tingling in your fingers, suspect this syndrome.
Pleurisy gets worse with a deep breath or cough. Heart pain doesn’t. When the outside covering of the heart is inflamed (pericarditis), the pain may throb with each heartbeat. Ulcer pain burns with an empty stomach and gets better with food. Gallbladder pain often becomes more intense after a meal. Each of these four conditions, when suspected, should be evaluated by a doctor.
You should be able to deal effectively with pain arising from the chest wall. Pain medicine ( acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen), topical treatments ( Ben-Gay, Vicks Vaporub, etc.), and general measures such as heat and rest should help. If symptoms persist for more than five days, see a doctor. And good luck.
