Using Applecider Vinegar to treat reflux caused by lazy esophageal sphincter?
My Mom insists that ACV will work for my reflux, but i dont believe it. My reflux is caused by a lazy esophageal sphincter, and i can feel anything coming up, acidic or not. I get heartburn all the time, from food or drinks, or even if i lay down or have to burp really bad. Tums, milk or yogurt are the only things that ever help the acid, but still dont keep the stomach contents down.
Will the ACV work? Do you have any other reccomendations?
The trigger that tells the esophageal sphincter to close is actually the pH of the stomach. If the stomach pH is not sufficiently acidic, it won’t trigger the valve.
So… often, heartburn is caused by too LITTLE stomach acid. A good way to tell whether your problem is too much or too little acid is to supplement the stomach acid and see whether it resolves the symptoms.
Lots of people use ACV, because it is a mild acid. But also because the bitter taste will stimulate stomach acid production. That’s one option – and it can be quite useful.
Give it a try! The ACV won’t hurt you (aside perhaps for worsening your heartburn that one time… and you can always take some Tums to relieve the reflux.) But if it does work, you’ll know that your issue is really too little acid.
(Personally, I recommend 1g of un-buffered Vitamin C instead of the AVC. It’s a somewhat stronger acid and it’s really good for you.)
